new Matangi train on the Johnsonville line

One of the new two-car Matangi electric multiple units is seen at the Wadestown crossing loop (apart from this and the stations at Ngaio and Khandallah, the steep line to Johnsonville is single track) being tested in September.   Not just the train but the galvanised steel masts for the electric catenary are recent, replacing the old hardwood masts from the 1930s.

It seems likely these trains will replace or at least supplement the elderly English Electric multiple units soon.  Officially the target is for full deployment of the new trains on this line by 2 May next.
