maps of Denmark 1837 and 1905 - the growth of railways

The first map from 1837 was 10 years before the country's first railway - by 1905 they criss-crossed the country, although this was still 25 years before the maximum extent.  The earlier map shows Iceland and the Faeroe islands which were then part of Denmark.  No railways were built on these islands but there was a narrow gauge network built on the island of Bornholm in the Baltic (Ostsee).  This was given Steven Joyce-style treatment in the 1960s, to the considerable regret of those who live there now, aware that it would be a first class tourist attraction.

The map from 1905 is from the time that a large chunk of the southern part of Jutland belonged to Germany (see earlier post).
