The waiting rooms are segregated by both sex and class - they don't want the men seducing the ladies and, even worse, the upper class mixing with the riff-raff...
The Newcastle on Tyne railway station was opened in 1850.  Today it has 12 platforms and is a Class 1 listed heritage building.  (See also the post about the intricate track crossings just outside the station)
