Zaz was initially a state works called Kommunar, producing combine harvesters in the Ukraine, part of the Soviet Union until 1991. In November 1958 the Soviet government decided to start production of small popular cars, changing the name to ZAZ - Zaporizhia Automobile Building Plant. It still builds cars.
