The tramway system in Beirut (French spelling: Beyrouth) in Lebanon opened in April 1908 and lasted until September 1965. The maximum system extent apparently was 12 km in 1931, before the influx of private cars saw the system shrink and finally close. Some of the former trams were turned into cafés that operated until the mid 1980s.
