Wellington City milk truck, early 1950s

Two Bedford trucks circa 1950 are in this view, the first used by the Wellington City Council municipal milk department, whose drivers went out delivering bottles to people every morning.  The empty bottles from the previous day were left in the mailbox compartment for them with tokens inside for the replenishment. This scene could be on The Terrace. For more, see the book Wellington: a Capital century.

When you think about it, its another sound todays generations would not recognise, the clanking of milk bottles , footsteps up the drive before dawn , and if you were lucky, the soft whine of a electric milk float. Great pic.
